How Lavender Essential Oil is Made
Lavendula augustifolia is a variety of lavender that yields the highest oil content. The leaves and petals are used to make oil. It takes about 35 pounds of lavender flowers to product 15 ml. of lavender oil. It is harvested when the color and oil content is just right. First, the lavender is cut at the base and taken to a distillery for processing. Steam, is injected into the still and heats up the lavender. This causes the oil to burst from pockets of the flower. The liquid is removed from the still. It is about one part pure lavender oil and forty parts water. Next, it sits until the water and oil naturally separate.
